BaZi Profiling: The 10 Day Master Profiles

"BaZi profiling" popularised a simple, powerful idea: that you can type a person by their Day Master — the Heavenly Stem that represents them. Because there are ten Heavenly Stems, there are ten core profiles, each with a distinct nature drawn from classical imagery. Here's all ten, so you can find yours.

Profiling is a friendly entry point, but it's a starting layer. Your full chart (strength, pattern, favorable elements) refines it — see how to read a BaZi chart.

The ten Day Master profiles

Each stem is one of the five elements in a Yang (active, expansive) or Yin (refined, adaptive) form:

  • 甲 Yang Wood — the Tree: upright, principled, growth-driven, dependable, a natural leader who likes to stand tall.
  • 乙 Yin Wood — the Vine: adaptable, resilient, relational; bends without breaking and climbs toward its goals.
  • 丙 Yang Fire — the Sun: radiant, warm, generous, expressive; lights up a room and shares energy freely.
  • 丁 Yin Fire — the Lamp: focused, intimate, illuminating; a quieter warmth that guides and refines.
  • 戊 Yang Earth — the Mountain: steady, reliable, protective, immovable; the anchor others lean on.
  • 己 Yin Earth — the Field: nurturing, resourceful, accommodating; fertile ground that helps things grow.
  • 庚 Yang Metal — the Axe / Ore: decisive, tough, direct, action-oriented; cuts through to get things done.
  • 辛 Yin Metal — the Jewel: refined, precise, image-aware, elegant; values quality and detail.
  • 壬 Yang Water — the Ocean: bold, mobile, far-reaching, resourceful; flows wide and thinks big.
  • 癸 Yin Water — the Dew: gentle, intuitive, quietly pervasive, perceptive; soft but reaches everywhere.

Why polarity makes ten, not five

A lot of "profiling" stops at five elements. That hides half the picture. Yang Earth (the Mountain) and Yin Earth (the Field) are both Earth, but they live completely differently — one immovable, one nurturing. The same is true for each element pair. This is also why your favorable element should always be named as a specific stem, not just "Earth" or "Fire" (why polarity matters).

Profiling is the start, not the verdict

Your Day Master profile is your base type — but two people with the same Day Master can live very differently depending on:

So treat the ten profiles as the cover of the book, not the whole story.

FAQ

How do I find my BaZi profile? It's your Day Master — the stem of your Day pillar. A calculator finds it instantly from your birth date and time.

Are the 10 profiles the same as the Chinese zodiac? No. The zodiac is your birth-year animal; your profile is your Day Master stem — a different and more personal layer.

Is profiling all there is to BaZi? No — it's a great hook, but the depth comes from strength, pattern, favorable elements, and timing.

You don't need to book a consultation to find your profile. A master sitting is worth it for big decisions — but for everyday questions, Ming Map gives you unlimited readings and unlimited follow-up questions, on the same classical method, for $9.90/month or $99.90/year — less than a single reading.
