How Almost Being Scammed by a BaZi Influencer Gave Birth to Ming Map
About fifteen years ago, I went through what I still consider one of the most difficult periods of my life.
My real estate business was struggling. We could barely find a single client. Money was becoming a constant source of stress, and my wife and I found ourselves arguing about things we had never argued about before.
When financial pressure enters a home, it has a way of affecting everything.
At some point, I became desperate enough to start looking for answers anywhere I could find them.
We even went to the temple.
While we were there, someone mentioned having our Chinese destiny chart read.
At the time, I knew very little about BaZi. I had heard about it through family members, but I had never seriously studied it myself.
Still, when life feels like it is falling apart, even a little bit of direction can sound incredibly valuable.
So we decided to try.
Our First Online BaZi Reading
We searched online and eventually found a BaZi master who appeared to be highly reputable.
I won't mention the person's name, because this article is not about attacking an individual. It is about an experience that completely changed the way we looked at the BaZi industry.
The reading cost us $388 at the time. It included several questions and a twelve-month outlook.
For us, that was not a small amount of money — especially considering the financial situation we were already in.
After we paid, several days passed. We were told that the master was carefully studying our chart and preparing the reading.
We actually took that as a good sign. We thought: maybe this really does require a lot of analysis.
So we waited.
When the reading finally arrived, however, something immediately felt wrong.
Several months contained remarkably similar interpretations. Parts of the reading felt repeated. Some sections seemed so generic that they could have applied to almost anyone.
It felt less like someone had deeply studied our lives and more like we had received a template with our names placed on top.
But what bothered us even more was the tone.
Almost everything was negative.
Problem after problem. Warning after warning. Bad luck. Financial difficulty. Relationship trouble. Obstacles.
Naturally, when someone tells you all of these frightening things are coming, you keep reading because you want to know one thing:

Eventually, we reached the solution.
And that was the moment we became very uncomfortable.
We were advised to purchase certain items, including an amulet, and were even told that changing our names could help improve our situation.
The total cost would have been well over $1,000.
We looked at each other and thought: how did a $388 reading suddenly turn into thousands of dollars worth of additional remedies?
Even worse, the specific questions we had asked — the questions that actually mattered to us — barely seemed to have been addressed.
We weren't expecting someone to magically fix our lives. We weren't expecting a fortune teller to hand us success.
We simply wanted thoughtful guidance.
Instead, we felt frightened, upsold, and brushed aside.
Then We Tried an In-Person Master
After that experience, we became much more cautious about online masters and carefully polished online personas.
But we still believed there might be serious practitioners out there.
So we tried again. This time, we went to someone in person.
And somehow, that experience irritated us even more.
For much of the session, instead of discussing our chart, the master talked about his other clients.
He told stories about people who had supposedly lost money because they didn't listen to him. He talked about clients having family problems because they hadn't followed his recommendations or purchased certain services.
And while I was sitting there listening, one thought kept running through my mind:
If I become his client, am I going to become the story he tells the next person?
That made me deeply uncomfortable.
BaZi readings can involve some of the most private parts of someone's life: money, marriage, family, career, fear, failure, ambition.
People often seek this kind of guidance when they are already vulnerable. Those conversations should be treated with respect.
Instead, we felt as though personal struggles had become marketing material.
That was the moment we decided: enough.
We Didn't Want to Give Up on BaZi
What happened next is important.
We did not decide that BaZi itself was nonsense.
We became curious.
Was this really what BaZi was supposed to be? Were expensive amulets actually part of the system? Did someone really need to change their name because their chart was supposedly bad? Did you need to keep returning to the same master — and keep paying — just to understand what was happening in your own life?
So we started learning.
And then we kept learning.
We studied how BaZi charts are constructed. We studied the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. The Ten Gods. Day Master strength. Useful and unfavorable elements. Combinations. Clashes. Luck Pillars. Annual influences.
The more we learned, the more something became obvious:
BaZi did not need all of the fear surrounding it.
The classical system is already extraordinarily rich. It gives you a framework for understanding timing, tendencies, relationships between elements, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and periods of pressure.
It does not need to frighten you into buying an expensive charm.
It does not need to convince you that your name is cursed.
And it certainly does not need to make you dependent on another person for the rest of your life.
That Is Why We Built Ming Map
Ming Map started from one very simple idea:

And it would not deliberately frighten you just so that it could sell you the solution afterward.
Instead, we focus on interpreting the chart itself.
If a difficult period appears, the goal should be to understand what that period represents and how someone might navigate it more intelligently. If certain elements or dynamics are helpful within a chart, we explain the principles behind them. If something is complicated, we try to make it understandable.
Because knowledge should make you less dependent, not more dependent.
